How to Remove and Replace a Bathtub

Upgrading your bathtub is one of the best ways to refresh your bathroom. Whether you're swapping out an old tub for a sleek new model or dealing with a damaged one, you don’t need to be a pro to get the job done.

This guide by The Trade Table will walk you through the entire process—from removing your old tub to installing a brand-new one safely and efficiently.

🔧 Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Essential Tools

✔ Cordless drill
✔ Reciprocating saw
✔ Drywall saw
✔ Utility knife
✔ Putty knife
✔ Pliers & screwdriver
✔ Pry bar & hammer
✔ Level & tape measure
✔ Caulk gun
✔ Strainer wrench
✔ Tub drain remover

Materials Required

✔ New bathtub
✔ Drain assembly
✔ 2x4 ledger boards
✔ Cement backer board
✔ Silicone & plumber’s putty
✔ Grout & caulk
✔ Floor leveling compound
✔ ABS glue (if needed for plumbing)

Step 1: Measure & Choose the Right Tub

Before removing your old bathtub, measure your existing space to ensure the new tub fits. Most standard tubs are 5 feet long and 30-32 inches wide.

🛑 Key Tip: Determine if your tub has a left-hand or right-hand drain by standing in front of it. The side with the drain determines the tub type you need.

Step 2: Shut Off Water & Disconnect Plumbing

1️⃣ Turn off the water supply. If your bathroom doesn’t have a dedicated shutoff valve, turn off the main supply.
2️⃣ Open a faucet at a lower level in the house to release pressure in the pipes.
3️⃣ Remove the tub spout & drain:

  • If the spout has a set screw, loosen it and pull off the spout. If not, twist it counterclockwise.
  • Use a tub drain wrench to unscrew the drain flange.
  • Remove the waste & overflow cover with a screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the Old Bathtub

This part requires some strength, so grab a helper!

1️⃣ Cut Away the Wall

  • Use a drywall saw to cut about 6 inches above the tub along all three walls.
  • If you have tiles, remove them with a putty knife.

2️⃣ Detach the Tub

  • Locate and remove screws or nails holding the tub flange to the studs.
  • Use a utility knife to cut through any caulk between the tub and the floor.

3️⃣ Lift & Remove the Tub

  • With a helper, lift the front of the tub slightly and slide 1x4 boards underneath to make it easier to pull out.
  • Carefully slide the tub out of the alcove.

Step 4: Dispose of the Old Tub

Fiberglass/Steel Tubs: Remove whole or cut with a reciprocating saw.

Cast Iron Tubs: Use a sledgehammer to break it into pieces (wear protective gear!).

Check Local Disposal Rules: Some cities require you to recycle old tubs.

Step 5: Prepare the Space for the New Tub

Check the subfloor – If it’s uneven, apply floor leveling compound.
Install a ledger board – Secure a 2x4 ledger board along the back wall to support the new tub.
Dry-fit the tub – Place it in the alcove without securing to ensure it fits properly.

Step 6: Install the New Drain Assembly

1️⃣ Apply plumber’s putty to the underside of the drain flange.
2️⃣ Screw the drain flange into place using a drain wrench.
3️⃣ Attach the overflow pipe and drain shoe according to the tub’s manual.

Step 7: Install the New Bathtub

1️⃣ Carefully slide the tub into place so the flange rests on the ledger board.
2️⃣ Check if the tub is level—use shims if needed.
3️⃣ Secure the tub to the studs using roofing nails or galvanized screws through the flange (do NOT drill into the tub itself).

Step 8: Reconnect the Plumbing & Finish the Walls

✅ Reconnect the drain assembly – Ensure a tight fit with the existing plumbing.
✅ Test for leaks by running water before sealing everything up.
✅ Finish the walls with drywall, tile, or a tub surround.
✅ Caulk around the edges to seal gaps and prevent water damage.

Test & Enjoy!

1️⃣ Turn the water back on and check for leaks.
2️⃣ Let the caulk cure for 24 hours before using the tub.
3️⃣ Step back and admire your brand-new bathtub
