A range hood is essential for keeping your kitchen smoke-free, odor-free, and fresh. Whether you’re replacing an old range hood or installing one for the first time, this step-by-step guide by The Trade Table will walk you through the entire process—including venting, wiring, and mounting.
Let’s get started!
Tools & Materials Needed
🔧 Tools:
✅ Drill
✅ Hole saw
✅ Oscillating or reciprocating saw
✅ Eye protection
✅ Dust mask
✅ Caulk gun
✅ Screwdriver & hammer
✅ Pencil
Materials:
✅ Range hood (ducted, ductless, or convertible)
✅ Screws & mounting block
✅ Foil tape
✅ Ductwork (for vented hoods)
✅ Caulk
Step 1: Choose the Right Range Hood
✔ Size: The range hood should be at least as wide as your cooktop (standard sizes: 24", 30", or 36" wide).
✔ CFM Rating: A good rule of thumb: Choose a CFM rating that’s at least 2x your kitchen’s square footage. (Example: A 150 sq. ft. kitchen needs a 300+ CFM hood).
✔ Type:
🔹 Ducted Range Hoods – Vent air outside (best for eliminating smoke & odors).
🔹 Ductless Range Hoods – Recirculate air inside using filters (easier to install).
🔹 Convertible Range Hoods – Work both ways (flexible option).
Step 2: Remove the Old Range Hood (If Applicable)
1️⃣ Turn off power at the breaker box.
2️⃣ Unplug the hood and disconnect the wires.
3️⃣ Unscrew the mounting hardware (get a helper to hold the hood as you remove it).
4️⃣ Lift & remove the old range hood.
🔥 Pro Tip: If you’re switching from a ductless to a ducted hood, you’ll need to install ductwork through the wall or ceiling.
Step 3: Mark & Cut Vent Holes (For Ducted Hoods)
✅ Measure & mark the vent location (preferably through an exterior wall).
✅ Use a drill & hole saw to create a pilot hole.
✅ Cut the vent hole using a reciprocating saw.
✅ Check for obstructions like pipes or studs—adjust as needed.
✅ Clear out insulation or debris that could block the duct.
🔥 Pro Tip: Always take the shortest path to the outside for better airflow!
Step 4: Install the New Range Hood
1️⃣ Run the power cable through the pre-drilled hole.
2️⃣ Secure the mounting brackets (or screw the hood directly into studs).
3️⃣ Attach the ductwork (if installing a vented hood).
4️⃣ Seal connections with foil tape & caulk to prevent air leaks.
Height Matters!
✔ Standard hoods: Install 18-24 inches above the stove.
✔ High-capacity hoods: Install 24-30 inches above the stove.
Pro Tip: Use a helper to hold the hood in place while securing it.
Step 5: Wire the Range Hood
IMPORTANT: Make sure the power is OFF before wiring!
✅ Connect white to white, black to black, and green to ground.
✅ Secure the wires inside the hood’s electrical box.
✅ Replace the electrical cover.
Pro Tip: If you’re unsure about wiring, consult an electrician for safety.
Step 6: Test & Final Adjustments
1️⃣ Turn the power back on.
2️⃣ Test all fan speeds & lighting.
3️⃣ Check for air leaks (for vented hoods).
4️⃣ Clean up debris & wipe down the hood.
Congrats! Your new range hood is installed! 🎉
