How to Fix a Leaky Faucet

That constant drip from your faucet isn’t just annoying—it’s wasting water and money! Luckily, fixing a leaky faucet is easier than you think and takes less than 2 hours.

This step-by-step guide by The Trade Table will show you how to fix a dripping kitchen, bathroom, or shower faucet—even if you’re a beginner!

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

✅ Adjustable wrench
✅ Phillips & flathead screwdrivers
✅ Hex key (Allen wrench)
✅ Replacement cartridge or washer
✅ Plumber’s grease
✅ Needle-nose pliers
✅ Cleaning cloth & bowl (to catch drips)

Pro Tip: Cover the sink drain with a towel or stopper to prevent losing small parts!

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Under the sink: Turn the shut-off valve clockwise.

No shut-off valve? Turn off the main water supply to your home.

Drain the faucet: Turn on the tap to let any remaining water flow out.

💡 Tip: If you're fixing a shower faucet, remove the handle faceplate and sleeve first.

Step 2: Remove the Faucet Handle

✔ If there’s a set screw behind the handle, use a hex key (Allen wrench) to remove it.
✔ If there’s a top screw cover, pry it off with a flathead screwdriver, then unscrew it.
✔ Pull the handle off gently to reveal the internal components.

💡 Shower faucet? Use needle-nose pliers to remove the locking clip before taking out the valve.

Step 3: Inspect & Replace the Faulty Parts

Worn-out washers or O-rings? Replace them.

Damaged valve seat? Clean or replace it.

Leaky faucet cartridge? Remove it and get a matching replacement.

How to Replace a Faucet Cartridge:

1️⃣ Loosen the packing nut with a wrench and pull out the old cartridge.
2️⃣ Take it to the store (or check the brand & model number) to find the correct replacement.
3️⃣ Insert the new cartridge, ensuring proper alignment.

💡 Tip: Apply plumber’s grease to O-rings for a smooth, leak-free fit.

Step 4: Reassemble & Test the Faucet

Reattach the handle and secure it with screws.
Turn the water supply back on.
Run hot & cold water for a few minutes to flush out debris.
Check the aerator (the small screen at the faucet tip) and clean it if the water pressure seems low.
