9 Easy Steps to Refinish Your Bathtub

9 Easy Steps to Refinish Your Bathtub

Got a dingy, stained, or worn-out bathtub? No need to replace it—refinishing your bathtub is a cheaper, easier DIY fix that restores its shine! This step-by-step guide by The Trade Table will walk you through how to refinish a bathtub like a pro and make it look brand new!

What You’ll Need

Tools:

✔ Screwdriver (to remove hardware)
✔ Firm brush / scouring pads
✔ Tack cloth (for dust removal)
✔ Paint roller & foam brushes

Materials:

✔ Abrasive cleaner (removes grime & soap scum)
✔ 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper (for surface prep)
✔ Drop cloths & painter’s tape (protect surrounding areas)
Bathtub refinishing kit (includes primer, epoxy resin, & hardener)
✔ Caulk & caulk remover

Pro Tip: Check your refinishing kit’s instructions carefully! Some steps may vary by brand.

Step 1: Remove Tub Hardware

Shut off the water supply to your tub.

Remove cover plates, drain plugs, and spouts.

Set aside all hardware in a safe spot for reinstallation.

Step 2: Deep Clean the Tub

A clean surface is crucial for the refinishing process!

Remove old caulk with a blade & chemical remover.

Scrub the tub thoroughly with an abrasive cleaner.

For tough stains, repeat the process 2-3 times.

Dry the tub completely before moving to the next step.

💡 Tip: Use a plastic putty knife to scrape off stubborn soap scum.

Step 3: Protect the Area

Tape off walls, tiles, and surrounding areas with painter’s tape.

Cover floors & fixtures with drop cloths to avoid spills.

Step 4: Remove the Glossy Finish

Most refinishing kits include etching powder to remove the tub’s original glaze.

Mix with water and scrub with an abrasive pad.

Rinse thoroughly to remove residue.

💡 Why? If the old glaze isn’t removed, the new coating won’t stick properly!

Step 5: Sand the Surface

Use 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper to roughen the surface.

Sand every inch of the tub for maximum adhesion.

Rinse and dry completely before moving on.

💡 Pro Tip: Use a tack cloth to wipe away any remaining dust.

Step 6: Apply Primer (If Needed)

Some refinishing kits include a primer—if yours does, apply it with a roller.

Let the primer dry completely before moving to the epoxy coating.

💡 Reminder: DO NOT use regular paint primer! Only use the one provided in your refinishing kit.

Step 7: Mix & Apply the Epoxy Coating

Mix the hardener & epoxy resin (per your kit’s instructions).

Use a roller for large areas & a foam brush for edges.

Work quickly! The mixture will start to harden after a short time.

💡 Pro Tip: Start from the bottom of the tub and work your way up to avoid streaks.

Step 8: Apply Final Coats

Apply at least 2 coats for a smooth, durable finish.

Some kits require up to 4 coats—check your product’s instructions.

Let the tub dry & cure for 2-3 days before using.

💡 Tip: Some epoxy coatings require waiting 1-2 hours between coats, while others need to be applied back-to-back. Read the label!

Step 9: Re-Caulk & Finish Up

Once the tub is fully cured, reapply fresh caulk around the edges.

Reinstall any hardware that was removed earlier.

Wipe down the tub & admire your work!

What If Your Tub Can’t Be Refinished?

Consider replacing your tub if:
❌ It has deep cracks or holes.
❌ Rust spots keep growing despite refinishing.
❌ The structure feels weak or unstable.

For small chips or cracks, use a tub repair kit instead of full refinishing.

For extensive damage, it might be time for a new bathtub installation.
