How to Install a Toilet

Installing a toilet might sound intimidating, but with the right tools, a little patience, and this step-by-step guide, you'll have your new throne ready in just a few hours. The Trade Table has all the toilets you need to get the job done right!

Tools & Materials You'll Need

New Toilet (one-piece or two-piece)
Wax Ring or Toilet Seal
Adjustable Wrench & Pliers
Bucket & Sponge
Hacksaw (if bolts are too long)
Plumber’s Putty or Heavy-Duty Lubricant
Screwdriver & Utility Knife
Level
Rubber Gloves (trust us, you'll want them!)

Step 1: Remove the Old Toilet

1️⃣ Turn Off the Water – Shut off the valve near the toilet.
2️⃣ Flush & Drain – Flush the toilet to empty the tank, then use a sponge to remove leftover water.
3️⃣ Disconnect the Supply Line – Use an adjustable wrench to detach the water supply.
4️⃣ Remove the Tank – If it’s a two-piece toilet, unscrew and lift off the tank.
5️⃣ Unscrew the Bowl – Pop off the bolt caps, unscrew the nuts, and rock the bowl back and forth to loosen it.
6️⃣ Remove the Old Wax Ring – Scrape off the old ring with a putty knife and wipe the area clean.
7️⃣ Block the Drain – Stuff a rag in the drain to prevent sewer gas from escaping (just don’t forget to remove it before installing the new toilet!).

💡 Pro Tip: If your bolts are rusted in place, spray them with a heavy-duty lubricant to loosen them up!

Step 2: Check & Replace the Flange

The toilet flange is what connects your toilet to the drainpipe. If it’s cracked or broken, replace it now before installing your new toilet.

Step 3: Install the Wax Ring & Position the Toilet

1️⃣ Place the Wax Ring – You can either:

Attach it to the bottom of the toilet before setting it down or

Place it on the flange first and lower the toilet onto it.

2️⃣ Lower the Toilet – Carefully align the toilet over the bolts and gently press down to seal the wax ring.

Pro Tip: DON’T rock or tilt the toilet after setting it down—this can break the seal and cause leaks later!

Step 4: Secure the Toilet Bowl

1️⃣ Bolt it Down – Place washers and nuts on the bolts, tightening them evenly on both sides.
2️⃣ Don’t Over-Tighten! – Too much pressure can crack the porcelain.
3️⃣ Trim Excess Bolts – If the bolts are too long, use a hacksaw to trim them.

🚨 DO NOT caulk around the base! If there’s a leak, caulk will trap water, leading to hidden damage under your flooring.

Step 5: Attach the Tank (If Needed)

For two-piece toilets:

Install the tank gasket on the bottom of the flush valve.

Insert the bolts from inside the tank.

Align & attach the tank to the bowl, tightening the bolts evenly.

Step 6: Connect the Water Supply

Reattach the supply line to the bottom of the tank.

Turn on the water valve slowly and let the tank fill.

Check for any leaks around the base or tank connections.

Step 7: Attach the Toilet Seat

Pick a comfortable seat that matches your toilet model. Options include:

Elongated or Round (based on toilet shape)

Soft-close or Heated (for extra comfort!)

Step 8: Test for Leaks & Flush!

Flush the toilet and check for any leaks.

If needed, tighten connections slightly—but don’t overtighten!

Clean up, step back, and admire your new perfectly installed toilet!
