How To Install a Kitchen Faucet

Upgrading your kitchen faucet is one of the easiest ways to enhance your kitchen’s functionality and style. Whether you're replacing an old faucet or installing a new one, the process is straightforward with the right tools and guidance. Follow this step-by-step guide to install a single-handle kitchen faucet and get your kitchen back in action in no time!

What You’ll Need

✔ Adjustable wrench
✔ Basin wrench
✔ Teflon tape
✔ Plumber’s putty or silicone sealant
✔ Bucket or towel (to catch water drips)
✔ Flashlight (for better visibility under the sink)

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to shut off the hot and cold water. If your sink doesn’t have shut-off valves, you may need to turn off the main water supply.

💡 Pro Tip: Open the faucet handles after shutting off the water to relieve any remaining pressure in the lines.

Step 2: Disconnect the Old Faucet

  1. Place a bucket or towel under the sink to catch any water.
  2. Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the hot and cold water supply lines.
  3. If your faucet has a sprayer hose, disconnect it as well.
  4. Remove the mounting nuts that hold the faucet in place using a basin wrench.
  5. Lift the old faucet out of the sink.

💡 Trouble Removing It? If the nuts are stuck due to rust, apply penetrating oil like WD-40 and let it sit for a few minutes before trying again.

Step 3: Prepare for the New Faucet

  1. Clean the area around the sink holes with a damp cloth.
  2. If your new faucet requires an escutcheon plate (to cover extra holes), position it correctly before installing the faucet.
  3. Apply plumber’s putty or silicone sealant around the base to prevent leaks.

Step 4: Install the New Faucet

  1. Feed the faucet’s supply lines through the sink hole.
  2. Secure the faucet by tightening the mounting nuts from underneath the sink. Use a basin wrench for hard-to-reach areas.
  3. If your faucet has a pull-down sprayer, attach the hose weight under the sink for smooth operation.

💡 Pro Tip: Before fully tightening, have someone check that the faucet is aligned properly from above the sink.

Step 5: Connect the Water Supply

  1. Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the water valves for a secure seal.
  2. Connect the hot and cold supply lines to their respective valves.
  3. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the connections, but avoid over-tightening to prevent damage.

Step 6: Check for Leaks & Test the Faucet

  1. Slowly turn the water supply back on.
  2. Run the faucet for a minute and check for leaks under the sink.
  3. Remove the faucet aerator and let the water flow to clear out debris, then reattach it.

Step 7: Enjoy Your New Kitchen Faucet!

Congratulations! Your new faucet is installed and ready to use. Whether you chose a sleek modern design or a high-arc pull-down model, your kitchen now has a fresh, functional upgrade.
