How to Change a Shower Head

Upgrading your shower head is a quick, easy, and affordable way to improve water pressure, reduce water waste, and enhance your overall shower experience. Whether you’re replacing a fixed-mount, hand-held, or dual shower head, this guide by The Trade Table will walk you through everything you need to know—from removal to installation.

🛠️ Tools & Materials You’ll Need

New shower head (fixed, hand-held, or dual system)
Adjustable wrench or pliers
Thread seal tape (Teflon tape)
Soft cloth or towel (to protect fixtures)
Drop cloth (to protect your tub/shower floor)

Pro Tip: Some shower heads have flat spots for a wrench, while others have textured grips for hand tightening—check yours before starting!

Step 1: Remove the Old Shower Head

1️⃣ Turn off the water supply – If your shower has a shutoff valve, turn it off. Otherwise, shut off your home's main water supply.
2️⃣ Protect the shower arm – Wrap it with a towel to prevent scratches.
3️⃣ Unscrew the old shower head – Try turning it counterclockwise by hand. If it’s stuck:

  • Use pliers or an adjustable wrench (wrap the shower arm with a cloth to protect the finish).
  • Hold the shower arm with one tool while turning the shower head with the other.

4️⃣ Clean the shower arm threads – Remove old tape, rust, or mineral buildup with a cloth and mild cleaner.

Step 2: Apply Thread Seal Tape for a Leak-Free Fit

1️⃣ Wrap Teflon tape (thread seal tape) clockwise around the shower arm threads 2-3 times.
2️⃣ Press the tape into the threads to create a watertight seal.
3️⃣ Check the washer inside the new shower head—it should be flat and in place.

Why Use Thread Seal Tape? It prevents leaks and makes installation easier!

Step 3: Install Your New Shower Head

For a Fixed-Mount Shower Head

✔ Screw the new shower head onto the shower arm clockwise.
✔ Tighten by hand until snug—it should turn easily at first.
✔ If needed, use pliers to tighten slightly (but don’t over-tighten!).

For a Hand-Held Shower Head

✔ Attach the hand-held mount to the shower arm by hand.
✔ Connect the flexible shower hose to both the mount and the hand-held head.
✔ Place the hand-held shower into the holder.

For a Dual (Combo) Shower Head

✔ Attach the diverter (this routes water between the fixed and hand-held shower heads).
✔ Screw the fixed-mount shower head onto the diverter.
✔ Attach the hand-held unit per the manufacturer’s instructions.
✔ Connect the flexible shower hose to both the diverter and hand-held head.
✔ Place the hand-held shower into the mount.

Step 4: Test for Leaks & Adjust

✅ Turn the water back on and check for leaks.
✅ If leaks appear, gently tighten the connections with pliers (but avoid over-tightening!).
Divert water between the fixed and hand-held heads (for dual systems) to ensure proper flow.

Final Touch: Wipe down your new shower head and enjoy your upgraded shower experience!
