How Many Mini Splits Do You Need?

How Many Mini Splits Do You Need?

Wondering how many mini splits you need to heat or cool your home? It depends on your space, layout, and heating/cooling needs! Here’s a quick breakdown to help you figure it out.

Do You Need Just One Mini Split?

Yes! Technically, you only need one mini split—but that doesn’t mean it’s the best setup for your home. A single heat pump (outdoor unit) can connect to multiple air handlers (indoor units), allowing it to heat and cool several rooms.

1 Heat Pump = Up to 8 Air Handlers
1 Air Handler = 1 Room (or open floor plan area)

If you have a single open space, one air handler can effectively heat/cool that area. But for separate rooms, you’ll need an air handler in each enclosed space—otherwise, the air won’t circulate properly.

How Many Air Handlers Do You Need?

You’ll need one air handler per enclosed room, so the number of units depends on your home’s layout.

Large Open Floor Plan? 1 air handler may be enough.
Multiple Rooms? You’ll need an air handler in each one.
Doors Closed Often? More units ensure even airflow and comfort.

How Many BTUs Do You Need?

Mini splits come in different sizes, measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The larger your space, the more BTUs you need. A simple rule of thumb: 20 BTUs per square foot.

➡️ Example:
🏡 1,000 sq ft home → Needs 20,000 BTUs

Possible setups:
1-zone mini split with 24,000 BTU air handler (slightly more than needed)
2-zone mini split with 9,000 BTU + 12,000 BTU air handlers (closer to 20,000 BTUs)

Typical BTU Ranges:
9,000 BTU → Cools 350 sq ft
12,000 BTU → Cools 450-550 sq ft
36,000 BTU → Cools up to 1,500 sq ft

How Many Mini Splits for Your Home?

It depends on:
Total square footage 📏
Number of enclosed rooms 🚪
Open floor plan or divided spaces 🏡

If your home has multiple enclosed rooms, you’ll need a multi-zone system with several air handlers. But if you have a large open space, one high-BTU unit might be enough.
