How to Install a Dishwasher

How to Install a Dishwasher

Replacing an old dishwasher? Installing a brand-new one? Good news! You don’t need to be a professional plumber or electrician to get the job done! With the right tools, a little patience, and this step-by-step guide, you’ll have your dishwasher up and running in no time.

Step 1: Remove the Old Dishwasher

Before installing a new unit, you need to safely remove the old one.

Turn Off Power & Water

Shut off the electricity at the circuit breaker.
Turn off the water supply valve under the sink—dishwashers connect to the hot water line.

Disconnect the Old Unit

Remove the front access panel (near the floor) with a screwdriver.

Disconnect the wiring from the terminal box.

Unscrew the water supply line—use a bowl to catch any leaks.

Detach the drain hose from the sink tailpipe or garbage disposal.

Unscrew the brackets securing the dishwasher to the countertop and cabinets.

Carefully slide the dishwasher out—place cardboard or a drop cloth on the floor to avoid damage.

💡 Pro Tip: Tape the power cord to the floor so it doesn’t move when installing the new dishwasher.

Step 2: Prepare the New Dishwasher

Unpackage the new dishwasher near the installation area.

Use the cardboard from the box to protect your floors.

Remove the front access panel to access plumbing and electrical connections.

Step 3: Connect Water Supply & Drain Hose

Water Supply Line

Attach a 90-degree elbow fitting to the dishwasher’s water valve.

Disconnect the old supply line from the shut-off valve.

Route the new supply line through the cabinet hole.

Secure it to the shut-off valve and tape it down to prevent movement.

Drain Hose

Disconnect the old drain hose from the sink pipe or garbage disposal.

Run the new drain hose through the cabinet hole.

Secure the hose higher than the drain inlet (prevents sink water from backwashing into the dishwasher).

💡 Pro Tip: Keep extra hose slack secured to the back of the cabinet.

Step 4: Position & Connect the Dishwasher

✔ Tip the dishwasher upright and carefully slide it into place.
✔ Connect the water supply line to the 90-degree fitting and tighten it with pliers.
✔ Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.
✔ Attach the drain hose according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
✔ Complete the electrical connections using wire nuts.

Step 5: Secure & Level the Dishwasher

Use a level to make sure the dishwasher is perfectly straight and aligned with cabinets.

Adjust the leveling legs as needed.

Secure the dishwasher using brackets on the underside of the countertop.

Replace the front access panel.

Step 6: Test Your Dishwasher

Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

Run a short cycle to check for leaks or installation issues.

Make sure water fills, drains properly, and the unit runs smoothly.

💡 Troubleshooting:
Not draining? Check for kinks or clogs in the drain hose.
Not filling? Make sure the water supply valve is fully open.
Not turning on? Check the electrical connection.
