How to Clean a Greasy Range Hood Filter (Step-by-Step Guide!)
This easy method requires no scrubbing—just boiling water, baking soda, and dish soap to dissolve the grease.
What You’ll Need
✅ Very hot or boiling water (the hotter, the better!)
✅ Degreasing dish soap (Dawn works great)
✅ ¼ cup baking soda
✅ Non-abrasive scrub brush
✅ Paper towels or clean dish cloths
Step 1: Remove the Filter
Most range hood filters slide or pop out easily. Look for a metal loop or latch and gently pull it out.
Step 2: Fill a Sink with Boiling Water
The hotter the water, the better it will cut through grease!
If your tap water isn’t hot enough, boil some in a kettle and pour it into a plugged sink.
Step 3: Add Baking Soda & Dish Soap
✔️ Squeeze in a generous amount of dish soap.
✔️ Sprinkle in ¼ cup of baking soda.
✔️ Swish the water around to mix (use a brush, not your hand—it’s hot!).
Step 4: Soak the Greasy Filters
Submerge the filters completely in the hot water.
Let them soak for 10-15 minutes to loosen built-up grease.
Step 5: Scrub the Filters
Use a non-abrasive brush to gently scrub away any remaining grease.
If the grease is stubborn, add more dish soap and scrub again.
Step 6: Rinse & Dry
Rinse thoroughly with hot water to remove all soap and grease.
Dry with a paper towel or clean cloth before reinstalling.
Step 7: Replace & Repeat as Needed
Slide the clean filter back into the hood and repeat this process every few months!
