How Mini Split AC Filters

The first step on how to clean a mini split air conditioner system is to clean the filters. This is probably the most important step in cleaning a mini-split system since it will help you keep the indoor air quality high and prevent any dust or dirt from getting into the unit and damaging it. Doing this regularly can also increase the lifespan of your unit.

Steps to Cleaning AC Filters

Here's what you need to do: turn off the power to your mini-split system.

Once it has completely stopped running, calculate the appropriate size for your mini-split system using our sizing calculator.

Check your manufacturer's instructions for how to access the filters. Once they are accessible, use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust particles stuck in them. Then, depending on which type of filter you have, either rinse them with water or replace them with new ones if necessary. Finally, reinstall them in their original places and turn the power back on. That's all!

How AC Coils and Fins

It may sound intimidating, but cleaning a mini split coils and fins doesn't have to be a hassle. With a few simple tools and about an hour of your time, you'll be able to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Here's a step-by-step guide you can follow:

  • Gather your cleaning supplies: Make sure you have a soft-bristled brush, mild detergent, bucket and water, clean cloths or towels, and compressed air.
  • Turn off the power: Before you begin any type of maintenance or cleaning work on HVAC equipment, make sure to turn off the power. This will prevent any accidental shock or other risks that come with working around electricity.
  • Clean the coils: To remove stubborn dirt, start by gently scraping with the brush. Then use your soapy water/detergent mixture to break down any remaining grime. Wipe down the coil surfaces with a damp cloth until all dirt is cleared away.
  • Rinse with water: Use a garden hose on low pressure or a rinse bucket to completely rinse away all soap residue from coil surfaces.
  • After cleaning, use compressed air at low pressure to dry out excess moisture between coil fins for better heat transfer efficiency.

Best Mini Split Cleaning Solution

Microfiber Cloths

  • Microfiber cloths are great for removing dust and debris from your mini split air conditioner's filters without you having to use any harsh chemicals. Simply wipe away dirt and buildup from the filters and coil surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth.

Vacuum Cleaners with Crevice Attachments

  • Vacuum cleaners with crevice attachments are great for getting into tight spaces like between the coils of your AC unit. This helps get rid of accumulated dust and dirt that could potentially clog your AC vents, reducing its efficiency and performance over time. Just make sure to change the filter after each use, or else you risk recirculating the same dirt back into your AC unit!

Foaming Coil Cleaners

  • Foaming coil cleaners are specifically designed for cleaning delicate AC coils without damaging them in any way. These cleaners typically come in aerosol cans, so they're convenient and easy to use — just spray the foam cleaner onto all affected areas, wait a few minutes for it to take effect, then simply wipe away with a microfiber cloth! Doing this regularly will keep your AC system running at peak performance all year round.

DIY Mini Split AC Cleaning vs Professional Cleaning

DIY Cleaning

If you are comfortable working on the unit and you're confident in your work, doing a DIY cleaning of the mini split is an effective solution. You just need to keep in mind some key tips:

  1. Unplug the unit from the wall before you start to work on it
  2. Clean the air filters regularly, usually every one to two months, depending on usage
  3. Use a vacuum cleaner or soft cleaning cloth to remove dirt and debris from hard-to-reach places like corners of the ducts and vents
  4. Make sure all parts are completely dry before reassembling

Professional Cleaning

  • If you don't feel comfortable doing your DIY cleaning, hiring a professional can be worth it in terms of time and energy savings. Not only do they have access to special tools that may not be available to a homeowner, but they can also identify any potential issues with the system that might require further maintenance or repair.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mini Split AC

Struggling to find the answer to how often to clean your mini split AC? Luckily, the answer is simple: once or twice a year. Of course, if you live in an area with extreme weather changes — like very hot summers and cold winters — or if your home has heavy foot traffic, you may want to clean it more often.

Additionally, it's important to perform some regular maintenance checks. This includes changing air filters every three months or so and vacuuming the outside compressor unit from time to time.

Performing these tasks will help prevent dirt and dust from building up in the system and causing performance issues down the line. Plus, it will keep your energy bills low by ensuring that your system works as efficiently as possible!

How To Clean Mini Split

All in all, keeping your mini split clean is a multi-part process, but it's not difficult if you commit to regularly wiping down, vacuuming, and scheduling your maintenance. Yes, it requires dedication, but your mini split air conditioner system will last longer and be more energy efficient if you take care of it.
