Should I Leave My Mini Split On all the Time in Winter?

6 minute read

Ever wonder if it's better to leave your new mini split air conditioner running all winter long or only turn it on when needed? You've invested in an efficient mini-split system to keep your home comfortable, but you also want to keep energy costs under control. Leaving it running 24/7 during the winter seems wasteful, but constantly turning it on and off can't be good for the system or your energy bill either.

Pros of Leaving Your Mini Split on 24/7 in Winter

Lower Energy Bills

  • Keeping the unit on all the time means it doesn’t have to work as hard to heat your space back up after the temperature drops, so it operates more efficiently. This can translate into lower power bills, especially if you have it set to a consistent thermostat setting.

Prevent Pipes from Freezing

  • Running your mini-split continuously prevents the temperature from dropping enough for pipes to freeze, which could lead to water damage. As long as you have it set to at least 55°F, your pipes and water lines should stay thawed.

Improve Air Circulation

Peace of Mind

  • Knowing your heater will automatically turn on if the temperature drops gives you peace of mind that your space won't get too cold. This is especially reassuring if you have kids, pets, or plants to keep warm. You can go about your day without worrying whether you turned the heat on or off.

Cons of Running Your Mini Split Continuously in Cold Weather

Leaving your mini-split running continuously through cold weather has some downsides to consider.

Increased energy usage

  • Constant operation means higher energy bills. Mini-splits are efficient, but they still consume power. Running it 24/7 for heating can significantly increase your electricity usage and costs over the winter.

Shortened lifespan

  • Continuous use can reduce the lifespan of the mini-split. The compressor, fans, and other components have to work harder in cold weather. This additional stress and run time causes more wear and tear, potentially shortening the unit's useful life by several years. It's a good idea to turn it off when you're away or sleeping to give it a break.

Risk of freezing

  • If the outside temperature drops well below freezing, a mini-split running constantly may struggle to defrost itself and could freeze up. The refrigerant lines are particularly vulnerable. Turning the unit off periodically reduces this risk. It's also a good idea to install a mini split rated for low ambient temperatures suitable for your climate.

Higher maintenance

  • More run time means the filters get dirtier faster and require more frequent cleaning or replacement. The drain line is also more prone to clogs from the increased condensation. Additional maintenance like professional servicing may also be needed more often.

Tips for Operating Your Mini Split Efficiently This Winter

Operating your mini-split efficiently this winter means finding the right balance to keep your home comfortable while optimizing energy usage. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your unit:

Location Matter

  • If you live in Birmingham, Alabama, this advice will be much different than living in New York since the temperatures will be much colder in New York.

Set a consistent schedule

  • Establish a regular heating schedule to maintain a steady indoor temperature. Program your mini split to turn on around 30 minutes before you wake up in the morning and turn off around 30 minutes before bedtime. This allows it to efficiently heat the space without constantly turning on and off. Consider using a smart thermostat to automate the schedule.

Choose an ideal temperature

  • The most efficient indoor temperature for winter is around 68-72 F. Any lower and your mini split has to work harder to maintain heat, using more energy. Any higher and you’re paying to heat an unnecessarily warm space. Find a temperature in that range that keeps you comfortably warm while still being energy efficient.

Use the fan only when needed

  • Run the mini split's fan only when the heating or cooling is actively running. Keeping the fan continuously circulating can draw more power even when the unit isn’t calling for heating or cooling. The fan will turn on automatically when the mini-split starts heating or cooling your space.

Clean the air filters regularly

  • Dirty, clogged air filters reduce airflow and make your mini-split work harder to heat your home. Check and clean or replace the air filters once a month if you notice reduced airflow or strange noises from the unit. Clean filters allow for the most efficient heating and help keep your energy costs down.

Consider using supplemental heat

  • If you have a larger space or want to avoid running your mini split constantly, consider using space heaters to supplement the heating in the rooms you use most. Run the space heaters on timers so they turn off automatically when you're not in the room. Make sure any space heaters you use are approved for unattended operation and have safety mechanisms like automatic shutoff if tipped over.

Should I Leave My Mini Split On all the Time in Winter?

So in the end, should you leave your mini split on all the time during winter? It depends on your priorities and needs. If energy efficiency and lower utility bills are top of mind, then running it only when needed is your best bet. But if maximizing comfort and convenience are most important, keeping it on 24/7 will ensure your space is always at the perfect temperature. As with many things, moderation and balance are key. Find the setting and schedule that keeps you comfortable while still being energy-conscious. Your mini-split is meant to make your life easier, not more complicated, so do what works for you.
