Pros and Cons of Mini Splits: The Comprehensive Guide

Pros and Cons of Mini Splits: The Comprehensive Guide

Mini Splits have been gaining popularity in recent years. With impressive advantages such as zone control, high efficiency, and no need for ductwork, more people are switching to mini-splits for new construction and renovation, but are mini-splits right for you? Read our comprehensive guide on the pros and cons of mini splits.

What is a Mini-Split?

Mini-split systems have two main parts, one or more indoor air handling units, and one outdoor air condenser. They work like central air, providing essential climate control, but mini-splits do not use ducts to connect the system.

Instead, they use a few small tubes and cables – usually less than three inches in diameter – to connect the indoor unit(s) to an outdoor unit. On multi-zone mini-splits, the indoor units are connected individually to the outdoor condenser, allowing you to separately change the temperature in each space, hence zone control.

Pros and Cons of Mini Splits

Pros of Mini-Splits

Compact Design

The company design makes them an excellent choice for small spaces and remodels, especially when ductwork is extraneous or infeasible.

Zoning

Zoning gives you greater control over the system, allowing you to change the desired temperature in different spaces, saving your unit from overworking to heat or cool stubborn areas.

High Efficiency

Compared to conventional central air systems, on average 30% more efficient. Mini-splits regulate temperature fluctuations effectively by using inverter technology. This allows them to modulate their output instead of constantly turning it on/off, which consumes a lot of energy. Mini-splits are perfect for small to medium-sized rooms.

2-in-1

Mini-splits allow you to both heat and cool off the same unit.

Simple Installation

Very little construction makes it possible for anyone to install – it can be a great DIY project that can save you money.

Quieter

mini-splits relegate their noise to the outside condensing unit – but even those are often nearly noiseless.

Cons of Mini-Splits

Cost

Cost can be a problem, especially for large multi-zone systems. More rooms mean more indoor units, so upfront expenses can be relatively high – but the money you save over time through energy savings will pay for itself and more.

Air Distribution

Sometimes air distribution can be an issue since the air handlers are not designed to condition large areas effectively. Indoor ductless units work better in conjunction with each other, but your installation cost will be higher.

Cold Weather

Cold weather has been an issue for some as people report their systems being unable to heat well in cold climates. This is a hotly debated topic in the community, but increasingly refined technology could soon be an issue of the past - as people are already reporting that their mini-splits work well even when it’s below freezing.

That being said, it’s recommended that if you live in a cold climate, you take the necessary precautions to ensure you get the right heat pump for you. We recommend finding a specialist to help you find the correct BTU for your needs, and when in doubt, always opt for a higher-sized system (look into a DFHP (Dual Fuel Heat Pump) in this situation).

More Pros or Cons of Mini Splits?

There are many more reasons to get a mini-split system than there are to not, chiefly energy efficiency, no ductwork required, and a complete 2-in-1 system for both heating and cooling. Mini-splits are an excellent option for building an addition to a house or adding heat to a garage, and anytime ductwork is extraneous or impossible. But they aren’t suitable for all situations and can be ineffective in large areas or costly with many rooms. Mini-split systems could save your utility bill, saving you from stress – see if they’re right for you today!
